October/November 2009 ~ Recent Developments

There are all kinds of things happening at Salem Radiology these days as we continually strive to better serve our doctors, their patients and our community.

Please Read More and call us anytime with any questions. Thank you for your ongoing support.

July 2009 ~ SR acquires GE 'Essential' Digital Mammography & Stereotactic Biopsy Unit

Beginning this month, patients in Salem will have access to "3rd Generation" digital mammography, the state-of-the-art in screening and diagnostic mammography. SR was the first provider in the region to acquire digital mammography back in 2004, long before any of the area hospitals and even before many of the insurance companies came to understand its clinical superiority. Five years have gone by fast and now, we are doing it again.

Benefits of the "Essential" include higher sensitivity for the detection of lesions along with enhanced comfort for the patients. The Essential also offers a higher quality, more comprehensive solution for the entire universe of mammography patients ~ for certain women with larger breast size, earlier generations of digital mammography had to "cobble together" multiple snapshots to get a complete picture. The Essential's "large plate" technology eliminates this problem and in turn, enhances the overall quality of SR's mammography practice by offering those patients less dose, less discomfort and a faster exam.

The Essential also includes a "built-in" stereotactic biopsy device. SR conducts breast biopsies every day under ultrasound guidance but until now, we have only been able to offer stereotactic-guided biopsy (required for women with suspicious microcalcifications on their mammogram) on an infrequent basis using a mobile stereotactic provider. We are very pleased now to be able to offer this service to all the women and physicians in our community at our Salem office on an as-needed, every day basis. This acquisition allows us to now offer a full continuum of biopsy and related interventional services to our patients.

Patients may call the Salem office directly to schedule mammography services (603-893-4352). SR also continues to offer digital mammography in its North Andover office (978-681-1212).

June 2009 ~ Robert C. Hannon Receives Certificate of Proficiency in Breast MRI

Dr. Hannon this month received this certification from the American College of Radiology along with a Certificate of Proficiency in MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy. Salem Radiology, through its partnership with Merrimack Valley MRI on the grounds of Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, now offers 3.0T MRI services, the state-of-the-art in MRI including most notably, Breast MRI. According to Dr. Hannon, "Breast MRI has become a standard of care. For women with a family or personal history of breast cancer, abnormally dense breasts or breast implants, Breast MRI is an absolutely essential and required part of comprehensive breast cancer prevention and treatment. As with all of our services, our goal is offer our community not only the best technology but the most advanced practice anywhere in the region. Thanks to our 3.0T scanner and the extraordinary focus of our clinical staff on this exciting new specialty, we expect that Merrimack Valley MRI will quickly become a center of excellence for Breast MRI."

Please feel free to contact Dr. Hannon or Dr. James Johnston, Medical Director at Merrimack Valley MRI at 978-682-1906 with any questions.

June, 2009 ~ Salem Advanced CT Imaging performs its 1,000th Cardiac CT

When Salem Advanced CT opened in May of 2006, Cardiac CT Angiography (CCTA) was an exciting new service we were only hoping might eventually fulfill its apparent promise. At that time, none of the payers reimbursed for this exam, which made for a tough business model at the beginning.

While the payers remain difficult (SACT still only receives payment for about 60% of its CCTA exams and fights with the payers about the rest), thanks to our referring physician partners ~ who have provided excellent support for our non-cardiac CT services ~ we have been able to make a go of it.

Now, three years into it, not only are we very pleased to have a state-of-the-art full-service 64-Slice CT operation at our Salem location, but we have emerged as the Regional Leader in Cardiac CT, a life-altering and life-saving exam for many of our patients. Recently, we performed our 1,000th CCTA exam ~ we hope to perform many thousand more in the years to come.

One of our patients best sums up the success of our Cardiac CT practice to date:

It literally saved my life. Where other scanners saw nothing amiss,
the equipment at SACT - and the skilled individuals who operate it - did.
- Steve Pittman, Salem Radiology patient

We have worked closely and collaboratively with many of the cardiologists in our area including most notably, Dr. Anthony Marino, who typically spends a day a week in our facility working with our team of radiologists and Radiology Practitioner Assistants (RPAs).

Please feel free to contact Salem Advanced CT Imaging at 603-898-3129 to learn more about all of our CT services, including CCTA. One of our RPAs ~ Ann Marie, Terry or Pete ~ will be able to assist you with whatever questions or needs you have.

April 2009 ~ SR announces New, Aggressive Pricing for High-Deductible and Uninsured Patients

Even before our economy's recent death spiral, the number of patients without health insurance continued to expand. The number of patients on high-deductible health plans has likewise been growing, exponentially so in recent years. The result obviously is that an increasing percentage of the folks in our community are forced to pay out-of-pocket for their care. In addition to convenience and quality, our goal is to make sure that imaging services don't break the bank. Local hospitals charge $500 or $600 for a digital mammogram (SR's price is $150 at time of visit). Local hospitals charge several hundred dollars for a foot x-ray (SR's price is $35). Read more about how shopping around for care can offer patients the highest quality care and save patients a fortune. read more

SR is pleased to annouce that its conversion to a fully digital network is now complete. Now, images produced in these locations will be sent in real-time over the Internet to our Salem office. Thanks to the addition of Computed Radiography (CR) and some fairly heavy duty bandwidth in those satellite offices, our referring physicians will be able to receive preliminary "reads" on urgent cases by a Board-Certified Radiologist within minutes.
